Let’s elaborate a little more about the NIMS concept so that everybody will have a clear idea.
What Does NIMS Stand for?
NIMS stand for National Incident Management System. NIMS is a standardized approach developed by USA homeland security to manage incidents, first established in 2004 as a directive by President George. W. Bush and was revised and improved further in 2008.
NIMS Concepts and Principles
NIMS provides a framework for coaction and compatibility by balancing out standardization and flexibility when required. This system provides a flexible framework that enables government and private entities to manage domestic incidents. NIMS provides a collection of standardized organizational structures; further, NIMS establishes procedures and processes to improve the coaction.
Main Components of NIMS
- Command and management.
- Resource management.
- Communications and information management.
- Supporting technologies.
- Ongoing management and maintenance.
Command and Management
This is based on 3 main organizational systems.
Multiagency Coordination Systems- specifies how the operating traits, organizational structure, and management components operate as a supporting entity.
Public Information Systems- This includes all relevant procedures and systems in communicating to the public about accurate information promptly.
This is how to be ready and stay up to date to face possible emergency challenges. This includes the following activities.
Planning, training, and exercise.
Achieving Personnel qualification and obtaining certification standards.
Acquisition of the equipment’s and obtaining certification standards.
Management of publication processes and relevant activities.
Aid agreements which are established mutually, and emergency management assistance compacts.
This is means how the resources are being used over the life cycle of an event. NIMS will specify harmonized processors and establish requirements for inventorying, recovering, mobilizing, tracking, dispatching, describing the resources.
Communications and Information Management
This is how the communication is standardized and placed on a framework for information management and information sharing support.
This process needs to ensure that efficient communications processes, procedures must exist across all key groups and territories.
This process helps to ensure that correct information flows effectively through a universally accepted architecture. Proper communications and information management systems will ensure that the decision-making gets all relevant and up to date information.
This means having dedicated technologies that will accelerate the ongoing operations and incident management activities. This is very important when unique technology is required to mitigate an incident. This includes voice and data communication systems, Tracking systems, Data analytics, and systems that processor information.
Ongoing Management and Maintenance
This helps NIMS Integration Center to offer relevant direction and support of periodic review for continued improvement.
